Great news today! inBrink.com put your Brink questions forward to Richard Ham, the creative director of Brink and he's kindly answered them. All up, We had a huge amount come through from the community, so we've picked the top 10 - here they are:
1)Will PS3, Xbox 360 and PC players be able to join the same matches?
Nope, 'fraid not.
2) How will the game differ across PC & Consoles?
Well, there's the obvious stuff: mouse and keyboard vs. controllers, dedicated servers vs. peer-to-peer matchmaking, etc. But as for the game itself, all players will get the full Brink experience no matter which version of the game they purchase.
3) How customizable will the weapons be? Are we talking Modern Warfare 2 with slight customization or Army of 3 (number 2) with almost full customization?
We've got 24 different guns in the game, including pistols, submachine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, heavy machine guns, and grenade launchers. For each of these, we've got a whole bunch of different attachments you can stick on them, including scopes, muzzles brakes, and extended magazines.
One of the more interesting things is that the same gun looks and sounds radically different depending on whether you're playing as Security or Resistance. For Security, the guns are pristine, in perfect condition, shiny, new and beautiful. When you're playing as Resistance, it's covered with cool graffiti and awash with colour. Even though the underlying gun is the same on either side, we think that giving our artists free reign to really play with the look of the weapons helps give players a stronger connection to the faction they're fighting on.
4) What can you tell us about the vehicles in the game?
The civil war on the Ark is a personal war - it is literally brother fighting against brother. With that in mind, we decided early on that Brink would focus solely on intense, in-your-face infantry combat, without player-controlled vehicles.
5) What happens if you don't have 14 people playing together? Does the game fill in the rest with AI teammates or you can have 4v4, 5v5 matches as well? And how does this effect co-op single player and the story itself?
It depends on how you're playing. Most of the time, if you're choosing to play through one of Brink’s two storyline campaigns, AI teammates will automatically fill in for players if not enough are in the game (this is true for solo, co-op, and versus gameplay). But if you like, on PC you can set up your own servers and change the default rules (such as turning AI characters off entirely, changing the max team sizes, things like that).
6) How will the game handle progression in multi player when your side loses in a fight?
If you're trying to play through a storyline in "proper order" in Brink's Campaign mode, the game will just work the way you'd expect it. If you fail your mission, you'll try it again, no matter if you're playing single player, coop, or competitive multiplayer. We're not going to force anyone to play all the missions in order, though. Brink is like a book… when you buy it, we're not going to try to stop you from turning to the last page and seeing how the story ends. We'll present it to you in the proper order, but if you want to skip a chapter, or play in any order you like, go right ahead. Our story is written such that you can jump in at any point and understand what you need to know.
Lastly, if you're playing Brink multiplayer in Free Play mode and happen to lose the match, you'll just move on to the next map in the rotation – much like you'd expect from any other multiplayer game.
7) How mod friendly will Brink be? Do you think the game will suit the desires and needs of the competitive FPS community?
We're very keen on making a great game that supports a rich online scene. One example of how seriously we take that is our dedicated servers on the PC. Those of you that played Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars will remember that we had Ranked Servers there to ensure the integrity of player statistics being reported. Unfortunately that meant you couldn't ever customize the server settings or run any user-created content on them without losing the server's Ranked status (and with it the player statistics). A side-effect of this was that a lot players completely ignored any server that wasn't Ranked, and thus never got to see any of the cool content created by the community. For Brink, we've decided to retool the way our servers work to allow people to customize their server to their liking while still having it report statistics.
As for the competitive community, we've always supported competitive play in our games and look forward to continuing that with Brink. We're bringing back the competition-friendly Stopwatch game mode from our Enemy Territory games, and also have some other cool things in the works.
8) Will there be any DLC? If so, can you share any details?
Right now, it's all hands on deck to get the game finished so everyone can start enjoying the game as much as we are.
9) Are you planning a closed/open beta?
We don't have any info to share on this right now.
10) What are the chances we'll see any female characters in the game?
We decided very early on with Brink that if there was any feature that we would have to severely compromise to get in, we'd be better off not doing it at all. Female player models are a perfect example of this. We really wanted to have them available in the game, but when we started to look into it, it turned out that we'd have to cut back hugely on the amount of character customization in the game and massively compromise the quality of our player animations.
